At Gartner’s Symposium/ITxpo 2006, Anand Sanwal participated in a panel on product portfolio management (PPM) / IT portfolio management along with peers from HP, AAA and the EPMC. Significant discussion ensued on American Express’ investment review process which they do as part of their Investment Optimization effort. During the investment review process, American Express units give up 10% of their investment funding to allow for reallocations across segment lines. Additionally, discussion around IT portfolio management tools yielded some interesting discussion. Sanwal argued that the processes underlying portfolio management need to be understood before a tool is put into place and that too many organizations seem to think that installing software is going to make them smarter and better managers of their corporate portfolio. Gartner analyst, Matt Light, summed it up best with regards to software tools when he commented, “A fool with a tool is still a fool.” Relevant link: Gartner blog about the panelAmerican Express CFO, Gary Crittenden, Discusses the Role of Corporate Portfolio Management in Strategy Development With 25+ CFO Peers October 2006

Finance and IT have worked together to deliver shared services with huge cost reductions, a streamlined planning process with an emphasis on driver-based rolling forecasts, and an investment-optimization process that lets senior managers prioritize new investments on a monthly basis. At the recent Sanford Bernstein Conference, American Express CEO, commented on the company’s Corporate Portfolio Management efforts (Investment Optimization) in his address as the conference. Chennault commented, “We’re also raising the overall return we generate on our investments, a process we refer to as Investment Optimization (IO). While we always required our investments to achieve certain hurdle rates, we’ve now implemented a far more disciplined process. Investments are thoroughly assessed and prioritized based on strategic impact, return, risk and payback period. Once approved and executed, we then apply a detailed follow-up process to ensure the investment actually generates the returns we expected. As with Balance Sheet optimization, our goal with IO is balance. Growth requires risk — it’s a fact of doing business. But with the improvements we’ve made, we’re now better able to balance our tradeoffs and make decisions that will sustain, and hopefully maximize, our returns over a longer time horizon.” To request Ken Chennault’s comments at the Sanford Bernstein conference in which he discusses Investment Optimization, you can request them by clicking here and it will be sent to you.
